We have known for 20 years what a vile creature Putin is, yet the world sucked up to him and his scummy oligarch companions in organised crime
The west has allowed itself to be lead a long by an endless line of lawyers in government. People who spout empty words for a living, not caring what they say once there is a fat fee at the end. There is no right or wrong, just a process.
That process involves making statements, flying to conferences, shaking some hands and then retiring to a life living off the fat of their empty words, often doing the rounds of financial institutions for “speaking engagements”, no more than camouflaged bribes for influence, while those same institutions made a fortune hiding the proceeds of crime. For a fee. Again. As ever.
This process came to its sordid conclusion with Trump. Before him allies were assured and enemies frightened by America’s power and will to use it. After Trump (and America will forever be defined as BT and AT for before and after Trump) America’s allies were afraid and its enemies empowered. Not only by the ludicrous snarling witlessness of Trump himself, but more by the fact of after four years of his misanthropic misrule he wasn’t in jail and his vote had not collapsed. In fact an extra 4 million people voted for him. An EXTRA four million. That vote defines America to all abroad and it does not matter who comes next
Maybe the Kremlin noted that. Maybe they even thought deeply about it. They realised that there was only a small window before the backlash against Trump started to take hold. Just as Jimmy Carter’s vacuity gave way to the “cross the street to pick a fight” muscular Americana of Ronnie Reagan. So the enraged reaction of literally hundreds of millions of the previously liberal middle class across the free world, caused directly by Trump, will define the rest of this century.
We think that the latter is unlikely. Why should the Kremlin have that much understanding of Trump’s impact when their equivalents in the free world have not managed to digest it.
But we do think they felt it was “now or never” on Ukraine. Hence the extraordinary medieval, half-witted and lunatic decision to go to war with not just the Ukraine but, effectively, the entire first world.
Is the reason that the Kremlin know that the Russian economy is collapsing? The sanctions for the 2015 “Anschluss” of bits of a foreign country, Ukraine, though far too weak as is now globally acknowledged, were showing the future. Russia was being written out of the world’s future prosperity. Nothing more than a supplier of basic commodities to those on its east and west, and a handy railway refuelling post for China
Just like the fascists in Argentina, exactly 40 years ago in 1982, the Kremlin thought they could take over Ukraine in a war designed to take the minds of the population off the economy. What were they thinking ? Invade Ukraine ? Ukraine was steeped in the mythology of the glorious partisan defending every street as much as any part of the former USSR. Why not invade China and India at the same time, if you have lost your grasp of reality that much
In 1905, the Kremlin’s evil halfwits, in that case those of the Czar, decided that a “short victorious war” against Japan would rebuild their power. In fact it was the beginning of the end for 300 years of the Romanovs. Putinism is barely 20 years old. Its end will be much quicker.
This needs to be an end of Russia forever wasting a fortune, in lives and treasure, indeed the very soul of Russia itself, waging war on non-existent enemies – both at home and abroad
